Overview
This case study covers the design of a web application that helps government workers manage COVID testing and assign healthcare professionals to patients more efficiently.
The problem
During the COVID-19 pandemic, managing testing patients was a major challenge for healthcare teams. The existing process relied heavily on manual coordination between government workers, healthcare professionals, and patients. This made it difficult to manage test requests, check staff availability, and assign healthcare workers on time. As a result, patients often had to wait, while healthcare professionals faced difficulties managing their schedules.
The process
01
Field research
Spoke to government workers about the pressures of testing in different locations and the data they needed to capture quickly.
02
Simplifying requests
Identified ways to make the process quicker and easier for both patients and government workers.
03
Smarter allocation
Designed a way to match patients with available healthcare professionals based on their location and availability.
04
Clear communication
Focused on keeping patients, government workers, and healthcare professionals on the same page with clear updates and status information.

Information Architecture

Wireframes
Started with low-fidelity wireframes to map out the main screens, user flows, and information needed at each step.

Visuals & Prototype
Built a clean interface with clear typography, simple layouts, and a visual hierarchy that made important information easy to find.

Challenges
Tracking availability
Healthcare workers were spread across different locations, making it difficult to see who was available and where.
Solution: A map view was introduced to give government workers a quick overview of locations and availability.
Handling bulk requests
Assigning healthcare workers manually became difficult when multiple test requests came in at once.
Solution: Automated allocation helped assign available healthcare workers based on proximity and availability.
The outcome
Testrack brought test requests, healthcare worker availability, and assignments into one place, making the process easier to manage for government workers.
What I took away
Designing Testrack showed me how much clarity matters when designing for complex, time-sensitive workflows. The goal wasn't to add more functionality, but to make the information people needed easier to understand and act on.
